Code of Conduct

The Academy for Excellence in Leadership is a Restorative Justice school, and we believe in fostering a community of respect. We expect that all members of this community – students, staff, and parents – will treat each other with respect. As a community, we reward positive behavior, and administer fair and equitable consequences when individuals do not respect the community and themselves. Ummer Ali, at Make the Road NY, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Lee are AEL’s Restorative Justice Specialists.

To work well in our learning community, students should:

  • Be prepared for class by bringing all necessary books and material with you.
  • Be punctual – arrive on time and ready to learn.
  • Be productive, alert and attentive to learning opportunities.
  • Be polite and respectful to everyone you encounter.
  • Be positive in your attitude and actions. What you do and say affect others around you.
  • Move about the school in an orderly and respectful manner.
  • Be considerate of the school, its classrooms and the school community by keeping our space clean, organized and quiet.
  • Be respectful of the other school communities that share our building.
  • Students are not permitted on another school floor without the permission of a school authority and a pass.
  • Welcome visitors and show them why our school is a special place for learning.

Students, our teachers will do their best to work with every one of you, both inside and outside of the classroom. However, if you show a disregard for our learning environment, your teachers will do their best to take up each matter individually with you, the student. They will do this first and they will do this privately. If this does not work and there is a continuation of unacceptable behavior patterns displayed by you, then the matter is referred to your parent or guardian. If parent outreach does not work to help shift your behavior, then it will be taken to your Guidance Counselor, Dean Dobles, AP Newville, and finally Principal Blissett.

What should students expect concerning how we deal with inappropriate behavior as a school?

(a) Teacher uses a non-verbal cue, such as proximity or a “look”

(b) teacher corrects student

(c) teacher counsels student

(d) teacher notifies parent

(e) teacher refers to the Guidance Counselor, a Restorative Justice Liaison, or the Dean

(f) teacher refers to an Administrator
